Formal Objection to Proposed Crown Development for the expansion to Campsfield House I am writing to formally object to the above‑referenced planning application. While I acknowledge the special procedures afforded under Crown Development Rights, these do not remove the applicant’s responsibility to provide transparent, current evidence, nor do they override the duty to safeguard the wellbeing, privacy, and safety of neighbouring residents. I strongly oppose the expansion of Campsfield detention centre. I do not agree with the practice of detention; I do not believe it is cheap or effective and certainly not in the long term. I do not feel comfortable with the way the government has sidelined the views of the local people. I do not think a detention centre expanding contrary to the local people’s views has any promising chance of success. The new prime minister claims to believe in decentralised power - so what is this?

I do not believe that the Home Office has made a compelling case for its proposal to expand Campsfield House Immigration Removal Centre. The Home Office has relied heavily on the assertion that there is a national need for additional immigration detention capacity, and that this need justifies the proposed expansion of Campsfield House. However, despite repeatedly requesting evidence to substantiate this claim, I have received only general assurances from the Home Office that additional capac... Read more

I am writing to object to the Home Office’s proposal to expand Campsfield House Immigration Removal Centre by 240 places, from 160 to 400 places. I object for the following reasons. Green Belt harm Campsfield is on Green Belt land. Green Belt land is meant to stay open and protected from unnecessary development. The proposed expansion would add large new accommodation blocks, up to 16 metres tall, compared with the tallest existing building at 9.4 metres. It would also add more parking, fenci... Read more

The harms caused by immigration detention on the mental and physical health of detainees and their families, as well as their access to adequate legal representation, are well documented by groups including Amnesty International and Bail for Immigration Detainees. For these reasons, the UK should be aiming to end all detention of immigrants, not increase it. Furthermore, the proposed expansion of Campsfield would require building on Green Belt land. I actively oppose the expansion of the Campsfield Immigration Removal Centre. Expanding the detention estate is proven not to increase removals. According to a report from Scottish Detainee Visitors, one of the government's key purposes of detention is to remove people from the UK, but in 2024 only 43% of people leaving detention were returned, a fact which has been under 50% since 2015. Dear Planning Inspectorate, I am writing to object to the proposed expansion of Campsfield House Immigration Removal Centre. The application reference is CROWN/2026/0000004. I object because the proposal would more than double the size of Campsfield, from 160 to 400 places, on Green Belt land. I am concerned that the expansion would make the site more built up, harm the openness of the Green Belt, and add pressure to local roads, services and infrastructure. The Home Office has not clea... CROWN/ 2026/0000004 reference. I believe it is the duty of government to make a coherent and evidence-based case for building and running new detention facilities. I believe that it has not done so in this application. Detaining people in immigration and detention centres is inhumane, costly, and under productive. The majority of people who are detained are later let out on bail. Caging people up leads to deterioration in their mental health and well being. Extensive evidence, which has been... Read more
