I oppose the expansion of Campsfield IRC. The detention and deportation of people who are seeking asylum and refugee affects me. I am a citizen of the country, I have rights and responsibilities. I feel very ashamed that vulnerable frightened people are not treated with kindness and compassion. How can this be happening in what was a civilised country. I am responding to this consultation as a member of the public concerned about green belt protection, accountability, and the use of public money to fund dangerous and unnecessary immigration detention. I object because tripling the floor space and enormously increasing the height/impact of a site on green belt land is clearly inappropriate. I am opposed to the proposed expansion of the Campsfield House IRC for a number of reasons. Generally I think IRC’s are both uneconomic and inhumane. They are uneconomic because many people detained are released back to into the community within a short period so there was no point detaining them. They are inhumane because detention is an extremely traumatic experience for people who are seeking sanctuary in the UK having fled persecution.
