I am very concerned about the proposed works that are actually going ahead to expand and build a unit to house 600 beds, a medical centre, restaurants, and sports facilities. The noise levels from all the work can be heard for miles around and my friends who live in Fort Rd have said it’s been unbearable for the last few months yet they have not been consulted at all. They are finding they cannot sell their house now. I live nearby and we are worried about the impact on our services and the environment. It’s very concerning that there has been secret meetings and no transparency of what is really happening. Residents are worried about the impact this detention centre will have on our community. Questions need to be answered about the safety of our neighbourhood. Will the detention Ctr have adequate security and will the men detained definitely be kept in and not allowed to roam our streets? Will there be a system in place to remove them back to their country of origin and how long will that take?. I’m hearing the costs are phenomenal too when so many of our young people need affordable housing to live in!
