I object to the significant increase in housing at Haslar IRC and subsequent extensive increase in the size of the building without appropriate engagement with the local community. With a new Prime Minister (Andy Burnham) stating he is keen to devolve responsibilities to local areas, this is a prime example of where the local community should be directly consulted in Phase 2 plans. I have specific concerns about the possibility of detainees being granted immigration bail and therefore being permitted out in the local community. A letter from the Home Office (previous minister Dame Angela Eagle) confirmed that detainees, 'will not be free to leave the centre or access the local area', however, significant changes to the originally planned accommodation indicate a willingness and determination to change the nature of the site and the conditions of its use. I am extremely concerned about the risk of unvetted people, or people already identified as being required to be deported, being free to loiter in the community, which will lead to it being less safe, especially for local young and vulnerable people. Absolute confirmation is required that people held at Haslar IRC for deportation will not be permitted to leave the centre or access the local area. I would like to attend a hearing if one is scheduled.
