Sir, I, and my wife, object to the proposed expansion and development of the Haslar Immigration Removal Centre on the following grounds, The proposed new buildings and changes to existing buildings are completely out of keeping given the historical importance of area, it being adjacent to the former Royal Hospital Haslar, Fort Blockhouse, the Submarine Museum and Fort Gilkicker. Noting the proposed capacity of the site and its location, vehicular access is limited. The inevitable increase in traffic movements will lead to even more congestion on an already busy road network. Noting also that public transport is extremely limited. The proposed increased scale of the site is already having a negative impact on property prices and sales interest in the immediate area. Site related traffic movements will inevitably disturb those living close to the site and on the routes to the site which are principally residential roads. The Borough of Gosport does not have the infrastructure to support those released on bail. The security requirements of the site limit and their appearance limit the scope for the local and county authorities to develop the coastline as a historical and recreational area to which people may wish to visit. It has long been an intention of the Borough Council to maximise use of the coastline for recreational purposes.
