This application should be refused. Detention of people using their right in international and UK law to seek asylum is unjust and inhumane and breaches the refugee convention which was introduced to prevent a return to the horror of world war 2, when countries including the UK refused safe haven to people fleeing Nazi terror and condemned them to the Nazi death camps. The current persecution of people seeking asylum in the UK has not stopped anyone from needing and trying to seek safe haven here, but it has brought fascists into mainstream politics, especially in Rupert Lowe's party, and inspired pogroms and racist attacks in communities across the UK. Extending detention at Haslar will only fuel far right activity, putting pressure on healthcare, schools, social services and others that have to respond when racist violence erupts in our communities. The people living there will need social, cultural, psychological and political support due to the severe impact of keeping vulnerable people in unfair and indefinite detention, and Gosport is a small town that does not have the infrastructure to provide the level of support needed.
