I am a Gosport resident who has previously volunteered at the previous Haslar Immigration Removal site, so I am not opposed in principle to some kind of provision in our area. However I would like to object to the proposed immigration accommodation centre in its current form. My concerns are about the impact this development will have on the local area rather than wider government immigration policy. This is a large development, and I'm not convinced the application shows that the surrounding roads and local infrastructure can cope with the extra demand. There will be more staff, deliveries, visitors and service vehicles using the site, and I don't think it's clear that the impact on local traffic has been fully considered. I'm also concerned about the effect on people living nearby. Residents should be able to enjoy their homes without increased noise, disturbance or loss of privacy, and I don't feel the application provides enough reassurance that these issues will be properly managed. Above all, the scale of the proposal also is out of keeping with the surrounding area. Before permission is granted, I think there needs to be much stronger evidence that the development can operate without having a significant negative impact on neighbouring residents. I am also disappointed that, because this is being dealt with as a Crown Development, local people have not had the same opportunity to comment through the normal Gosport Borough Council planning process. For a proposal of this size and importance, I believe local views should carry significant weight. For these reasons, I ask the Planning Inspector to look carefully at whether the impacts on local residents have been fully assessed. If they have not, I believe planning permission should be refused, or at the very least the application should be amended to address these concerns or returned to Gosport so local residents can have their say.
