Whoever thought an IRC hosting 600 individuals could be located in a small enclosed site at the end of peninsula really did not do their homework. No consideration has been given to the associated issues of parking provision for the multitude of staff required to service the facility or access via local roads. When reading the paperwork it is painfully obvious more consideration is given to “protected species” than human beings. Local residents have suffered disruption from noise, light and building dust blowing into their homes for two years with the promise of 3 more years of suffering. They have seen the value of their homes crash and effectively become unsalable. Most local people were aware of the purpose of this facility when they purchased their property but the 130 inmates were no problem. I suspect a reduction to, say, 250 might be acceptable but 600 is way over the capacity for this site. The proposed increase is typical of a Government Department which hasn’t a clue how it affects the community and a Council which has failed the very people who live in the vicinity who they are supposed to represent.
